Something smells spruce-y! It’s our annual South Slough Spruce Pale Ale! This 5.5% ABV Pale Ale is brewed with 40 pounds of freshly picked Sitka Spruce Tips which contribute to its sweet, floral, and evergreen flavor profile. Spruce Tips were once used as a flavoring in ancient beers, and in recent years they are making a comeback as a delicious replacement for hops! This once a year beer benefits the South Slough Reserve, where we picked the Spruce Tips with help from the local community, and to whom we donate 10% of our gross sales to benefit South Slough Stewardship Programs!
Not far from 7 Devils Brewing Co. lies the South Slough Estuarine Research Reserve. The Reserve manages and studies nearly 7,000 acres of natural area, including open water channels, tidal and freshwater wetlands, riparian areas, and forested lands. Its visitor center is open to the public and has a wealth of information about the local ecosystem. Public hiking trails zig zag the forested hills leading down to the estuary, where boardwalks and foot trails lead through the wetlands. It is a truly beautiful and special place that we love to visit! If you’ve never been, you are missing out!
For the past 6 years we have collaborated with the South Slough to make the South Slough Spruce Pale Ale. We love gathering together our staff and other locals to go pick the spruce tips each year, even in the pouring rain! The beer turned out great this year- punchy aromas of spruce (obviously) and citrus with a nice malty body and lingering forested finish. Come join us at the brewery on May 31st for the official release of the South Slough Spruce Pale Ale! We will be pouring samples of the beer, giving tours of the brewery, and hosting Tiller of the Moon for some sweet live music in the evening! And we’ve got some shiny new cornhole sets on the patio for your enjoyment too. See you there!
